The Federal Council recommends rejecting the "Compulsory Health Insurance Premium Relief Initiative" ("Prämien-Entlastungs-Initiative")

12. April 2024 – On 9 June 2024, the eligible Swiss electorate will vote on the popular initiative "Maximum 10 percent of income for compulsory health insurance premiums (Premium Relief Initiative)”. This initiative demands that no one should spend more than 10 per cent of their disposable income on health insurance premiums. At least two-thirds of the necessary premium subsidies would be financed by the Swiss Confederation and the rest by the cantons. The Federal Council rejects the initiative primarily due to the heavy burden it would place on the Swiss Confederation’s finances. In addition, the initiative lacks a direct incentive to curb healthcare costs. The Federal Council prefers the more balanced indirect counter-proposal.
