Stem Cells & Blood Components

Research on stem cells has led to great scientific hopes in recent years. However, it is ethically controversial since the cells are usually obtained from early human embryos and the embryos are destroyed in the process. Research on embryonal stem cells is governed by the Stem Cell Research Act and its Ordinance.

Both blood and blood components fall within the definition of “pharmaceuticals” and are thus governed by the vast legislation on pharmaceuticals.
