Swissmedic: New strategic Approach to minimizing Animal Testing in the Development of Medicinal Products
Swissmedic has endorsed a joint statement of the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) calling on medicine developers, manufacturers, regulators and national control laboratories to further develop and implement alternatives to animal testing throughout the lifecycle of human medicines. Swissmedic reaffirmed its commitment to the 3Rs principles (reduce, replace, refine) and emphasised that meaningful progress requires international regulatory alignment and harmonisation. The statement sets the long-term objective of replacing animal testing at all stages of medicinal product development and regulation, from early research and pre-clinical testing through to marketing authorisation and post-marketing surveillance. According to ICMRA, achieving this objective will require the development of scientifically validated non-animal methods, regulatory acceptance of such approaches, and close international collaboration.
