FOPH: Poison Information Centre: Government seeks to secure long-term Funding through Legislation

On 21 October 2026, the Federal Council has opened a consultation on amendments to the Chemicals Act and the Therapeutic Products Act aimed at securing the long-term financing of Tox Info Suisse, Switzerland’s national poison information centre. Following unsuccessful discussions with representatives of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries on a voluntary funding arrangement, the Federal Council proposes requiring manufacturers of chemicals and marketing authorisation holders of medicinal products to contribute to the operation and financing of the centre. The proposal reflects the fact that chemical products and medicines account for more than 70 per cent of poisoning cases handled by Tox Info Suisse, which responds to around 40’000 enquiries annually. Approximately 5’500 chemical companies and 300 pharmaceutical companies would be affected, with average annual contributions of around CHF 240 and CHF 5’300 respectively. The consultation period runs until 8 February 2027.
