FOPH: Public consultation on amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR)

In June 2024, the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted a reform of the International Health Regulations (IHR) to strengthen the international framework for preventing and controlling the cross-border spread of diseases. The amendments aim to deepen cooperation between the WHO and member states, promote transparency in the dissemination of health information, and improve capacities to respond to health emergencies.

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has announced that the Federal Council has decided to conduct a public consultation on the amendments to the IHR, as was done during the last comprehensive revision in 2005, due to significant public interest. This consultation, which will be open until 27 February 2025, provides a platform for public and expert engagement in the implementation of the IHR amendments to improve public health protection.

Following a detailed analysis, the FOPH concluded that Switzerland already has the necessary resources and structures in place to comply with the new IHR requirements, and that no additional legislative changes are needed.
