Swissmedic: Amendment of the rules and beginning of the new term of office for the Swissmedic Medicines Expert Committees
Swissmedic announced that the amended rules for the two Swissmedic Medicines Expert Committees (SMEC) came into force on 1 January 2025. These rules primarily govern the composition, election, and remit of the two expert committees – the Human Medicines Expert Committee (HMEC) and the Veterinary Medicines Expert Committee (VMEC), which support Swissmedic with their external expertise. In addition to formal adjustments and clarifications, the maximum number of ordinary members of the VMEC has been increased from seven to nine, allowing for the potential expansion of the committee when necessary.
Furthermore, Swissmedic informed that the new term of office for the SMEC, covering the years 2025 to 2028, began on 1 January 2025. In September and November 2024, the Agency Council appointed the members for the new term and elected the Chairs of both committees.
