FOPH: Organ donation statistics 2024
The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has published the organ donation statistics for 2024. A total of 187 deceased individuals donated organs, representing a slight decrease compared to 2023 (200 donations). In total, 539 organs from deceased donors and 115 from living donors were transplanted. As a result, 637 patients received life-saving treatments or improved quality of life. The number of individuals on the waiting list dropped to 1,331 (2023: 1,391).
The expanded opt-out system, approved by Swiss voters in 2022, is being introduced. To ensure binding documentation, a national organ and tissue donation registry is currently being established, with implementation planned for 2026. A nationwide information campaign will accompany the introduction of the registry.
Until then, the extended consent solution will continue to apply, allowing the removal of organs and tissues after death only with the consent of the affected person or their relatives.
