FOPH: Federal Government considers new solution for nationwide cancer case registration

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) decided to discontinue the further development of the existing cantonal cancer registration software. This decision is based on the current system's high labor intensity, due to decentralized and non-standardized structures. Currently, there are thirteen cantonal cancer registries and one children's cancer registry. The cases are collected manually in various formats, complicating national evaluations. The federal government is now exploring how to implement a fully digitized solution for cancer registration. The FOPH plans to collaborate with the cantonal health directors to develop a new solution aimed at optimizing and fully digitizing the registration process in Switzerland in the long term. As a transitional solution, the government will migrate data to existing cantonal software.
