FOPH: Tackling antibiotic resistance with individual dispensing
At its meeting on 25 June 2025, the Federal Council decided on the creation of a legal basis for the individual dispensing of antibiotics on a prescription-only basis. The task of drafting the relevant legal provisions and submitting a consultation draft by the end of 2026 was given to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).
In 30 to 50% of the cases, the prescribed amount of antibiotics does not match the quantity in the original packaging. This can lead to antibiotics being taken incorrectly, thereby promoting the development of resistance. With the new legal basis, inappropriate use of antibiotics and thus also the development of antibiotic resistance shall be reduced.
