Canton of Zurich: Consultation on Health Act
At its meeting on 18 June 2025, the Cantonal Council of Zurich has decided to start the consultation on the complete overhaul of the cantonal Health Act (Gesundheitsgesetz, GesG). The consultation process will run until 31 October 2025.
The GesG has been in force since 1 July 2008 and was partially revised multiple times. A complete revision is now particularly necessary because health law in Switzerland has undergone significant harmonisation at federal level. Therefore, the cantonal health law must be brought into line with the overarching federal law. Generally, the revision has the goal to close regulatory gaps, implement the principle of legality, modernise and harmonise technology, and make the terminology of the law easier to read and understand.
Key adjustments include the modernisation of the health care system, such as the shift form inpatient to outpatient treatment or the regulation of telemedicine, the extension of professional licenses and reporting requirements, prevention and health promotion as well as the creation of a legal basis to run an independent complaints office for patients.
