FOPH: Consultation on Raising Minimum Health Insurance Deductibles to Strengthen Cost Responsibility

The Federal Council has initiated a consultation on raising the minimum deductibles for compulsory health insurance, aiming to promote personal responsibility and curb rising healthcare costs. The proposed amendment to the Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance (Bundesgesetz über die Krankenversicherung, KVG), prompted by a parliamentary motion, would increase the minimum deductibles from CHF 300 to CHF 400 and introduce an adjustment mechanism based on insured persons’ cost contributions, with children remaining exempt. Deductibles would be adjusted whenever an insured person’s total cost participation falls below 13.5% of the gross benefits paid by compulsory insurance.
