Swissmedic: New Measures Against Designer Drugs
To address the significant health risks posed by new synthetic “designer drugs”, the Federal Department of Home Affairs added additional psychoactive substances to the Narcotics Directory Ordinance (Betäubungsmittelverzeichnisverordnung, BetmVV-EDI) from 13 March 2026, making their manufacture, trade, and use illegal. The measure aims to curb early abuse of emerging substances and prevent Switzerland from becoming a hub for designer drug trafficking. Since 2011, Swissmedic has monitored developments and expanded the list to include 320 substances and substance groups.
